Which is the most trusted translation of the Qur'an in English? Is it alright to use Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation?

There are many websites which list these errors and Dr. Bilal Philips has spoken about it in many of his lectures too.

Some of the main issues are:

  • Translating Allah's Throne as ‘throne of authority’ - check Surah Taha, verse 5.
  • Denying that modern day usury falls under the prohibition of interest - read his footnotes on the verses prohibiting interest
  • Describing Paradise and Hell and their details as metaphors, instead of real places - read his footnotes explaining any of the Surahs dealing with Paradise or Hell
  • Translating Burooj as Zodiacal Signs in Surah Burooj (Chapter 85) - many modern people use his translation to justify horoscopes.
  • Explaining that Jinn could refer to people who are strangers in Arabia - see Surah Jinn (Chapter 72) Note that this same problem exists in Muhammad Asad's translation.

There are many other issues which you will find online, but these are among the major problems.

As for the reason why Shaykh Ahmed Deedat (rahimullah) promoted this translation was that he lived in a time before the Saheeh International, Muhsin Khan or Farouq Azam translations were published or popular; so he propagated what was available at that time, among which Yusuf Ali's was most comprehensive.

The most authentic translations are the ones by Muhsin Khan, Saheeh International and Farooq Azam Malik.

Allah knows best.
