Who are considered ‘the truthful’ ones? Does it apply to someone specific like the prophets, martyrs, or could it be any normal truthful person too?

The scholars of Tafsir have mentioned that as-Siddeeqiyyun (the Truthful) in Surah al-Nisa’ (verse 69), are those whose belief/truthfulness has become complete in what the prophets came with. So they not only learned the truth, but also believed in it with yaqin (conviction) and by acting upon it with sayings and actions, and preaching it.

“And whoso obeys Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqun (those followers of the Prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr As-Siddiq), the martyrs and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!” [1]

And Allah knows best.
