Is it not suffice to be labelled a muslim on the path of Qur’an, Sunnah and Salaf us-Soleh rather than Salafi, Wahabi, Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah and so on. Don't these labels cause division?
Allah, in the Qur’an called us Muslims. Each of the Prophets said: We are Muslims. The Prophet (ﷺ) labelled us as Muslims.
However, after the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), a lot of division arisen like Rafidah and Khawarij who also attributed themselves to Islam. Therefore, the scholars of the time took the approach to declare themselves as Islam of the Ahl us-Sunnah wal Jama’ah - the body of the Muslims that existed during the time of the companions to distinguish themselves from the splinter groups.
Some scholars also view that we should call ourselves Salafi to distinguish because the other deviant groups also called themselves Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah. As for Wahabi, it is not something that we call ourselves, rather it is the term coined by others to claim that we are followers of Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahab. The truth is we do not follow him, but follow the path of Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah.
While it is true that calling ourselves with names cause division, we must also distinguish ourselves from the deviant groups. The best name to call ourselves is Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah because we are adherence of the salaf the first three generations whom were attributed to Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah. Allah knows best.
