Is there any authentic hadith that indicates that the dead person should be positioned facing the qiblah?
The hadith that says that when a person has died he should be immediately made to face qiblah is not authentic. However some scholars like Ibn Baz have allowed this practice based on the hadith which says, "The Ka’bah is your qiblah in life and in death." Others like Shaykh Munajjid are of the opinion that if this is done there is no problem and if it is not done then it is also fine because there is no evidence for it from the Sunnah. Here is Shaykh Munajjid’s [1] opinion on the issue:
Ibn Hazam (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Turning the deceased to face the Qiblah is good, but if this is not done it does not matter.”
Allah says:
رِبُۚ فَأَيۡنَمَا تُوَلُّواْ فَثَمَّ وَجۡهُ ٱللَّهِۚ
“So wherever you turn (yourselves or your faces) there is the Face of Allah (and He is High above, over His Throne)” [2]
There is no text which indicates that the deceased should be turned to face the qiblah. The Prophet (ﷺ) died in the arms of ‘Aa’ishah, and she described the moments of his death in detail, and she did not say that she turned him to face the qiblah. Her hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari (4440) and Muslim (2444).
And Allah knows best.
