How do we understand the attributes of Allah?
When we keep the obvious meanings regarding the names and attributes of Allah such as His hands, face, etc., does it mean our mind should be empty of any meaning (inclusive literal meaning) as we already submit to the true meaning to Allah?
The answer to this is, no. This is not the correct understanding of Ahl-us-Sunnah.
To submit the meaning of Allah's names and attributes to Allah (which is known as tafweedh) has two meanings:
- The correct meaning, and that is to affirm the word and its meaning which it indicates, then to submit the knowledge of "how it is" to Allah. So we affirm His beautiful names and noble attributes, and we know their meanings and believe in them, but we do not know "how they are."
- The false meaning; and that is to affirm the word without knowing its meaning (or without the meaning being defined). And this is the way of the Mufawiddah (those who say, "we submit the meanings of the names and attributes to Allah"). So they affirm the words only, and then say, "we do not know its meaning, nor what Allah intended by them!" Shaykh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah says regarding these people: "So it is clear that the words of the people of Tafweedh, who claim to be followers of the Sunnah and the Salaf, are of the most evil of the words of the people of innovation and heresy."
