If Allah is good and wishes good for His creatures, why did He legislate something which would be harmful to most women?
This is simply because of a greater good. The harm which comes from its prohibition which we see in modern society today claim to a monogamy which gives rise to mistresses, girlfriends, prostitutions and other evils. Where the society permits it, these are minimised.
The reality of human societies in countries who claim to be monogamists’, statistics shows that polygamy is higher in these countries then the ones who permit it. Countries like America, Canada, UK, Germany, France, India etc more than fifty percent male have extra marital relations.
So this is something which is happening throughout the world. These societies are in reality not monogamist. Their laws state that yes, you can have only one wife from freed women but you can have as many concubines as you wish- so where is the monogamy? So monogamy is really a dream which never existed anywhere in the world. In fact monogamy is more strongly practiced in Muslims than in non-Muslims.
It is not only to consider the emotions of the first wife, rather it is a cure that can be used for many cases with conditions and etiquettes, also when number of women is more than the number of men. Islam is the way of life that Allah loves, and He knows best.
