How can we strive to be al-Al-Insan Al-Kamil?
The Sufis had a goal, the status of what is called al-Al-Insan Al-Kamil. The one who has achieved union with Allah is called that, which means the perfect man. This is the status that they strive for, al-Al-Insan Al-Kamil, which is one who has realized his essential oneness with Allah. Because the idea of becoming one with Allah was so obviously heretical and people were executed for it, so they started to say that the goal was not to seek to become one with Allah, since Allah and the creation are all one. They used the verse from the Qur’an as justification:
“So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah.” [1]
Also:
“Everything will be destroyed except His Face.” [2]
The only thing that is real in reality is Allah. It is not to say the goal really is not to become one with Allah, because we are already one with Allah. It is the realization, that one is one with Allah, so that is the al-Al-Insan Al-Kamil, one who has achieved that realization of knowing that he and Allah are one.
Further description is given by Ibn ‘Arabi, when he described this idea of the perfect man, “Man,” says Ibn ‘Arabi, “unite in himself both the form of God and the form of the universe. He alone manifests the Divine Essence together with all his Names and Attributes. He is the mirror by which God is revealed to Himself, and therefore, the final cause of creation. We, ourselves are the attributes by which we describe God. Our existence is merely an objectification of his existence. While God is necessary to us in order that we may exist, we are necessary to Him, in order that He may be manifested to Himself.” Therefore, one of the very famous fabricated traditions is that Allah desired to be known.Allah, like a lost treasure, desired to be known, so He created man so that He may be known.
Of course, one can argue about this Al-Insan Al-Kamil, would he have a stage higher than the Prophet Mohammed (ﷺ)? The Prophet Mohammed (ﷺ) worshiped until he died. Is this person on a higher stage? In later years, down in the 15th and 16th centuries we find a corruption and decay of this thought to the point that these kinds of practices of Malamatiyyah were leading shaykhs of the Sufi order to become well-known for some of the worst acts of open corruption - bestiality, rape, all kinds of idiocy not even fitting to be spoken about. However, all of this justified by their practices of disdain to the feelings of man and humankind. When the goal was supposedly for spiritual elevation, the more outrageous a person could be, the more spiritually attractive he became. The worst of man became honored and raised.
In conclusion, this Al-Insan Al-Kamil is a false and fictitious concept and not from the teaching of Islam.
