All of us have experienced anger at different stages for different reasons. Islam gives us encouragement and guidance on how we can take control of our emotions instead of letting them control us. If you have temper issues and get angry easily, this article is here to help you control anger and lead a more fulfilling life.
#1 Seek refuge with Allah from Shaitan
Anger is but from the whispers of Shaitan. His whispers are never preceded by informative apprises. Thus, it always gets late for us to realize that we’ve been trapped by them. Therefore, whenever we get angry, we should remind ourselves that it is the inception of satanic whisper, and immediately seek Allah’s help against the cursed one. It’s not a tough job at all. Just say “A-‘oodhubillaahi minash-shaytaanir-rajeem” (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed saitan) and you are done! This is a prophetic remedy from the authentic sunnah.1
#2 Change your physical position
The Prophet said, “If any of you becomes angry and he is standing, let him sit down, so his anger will go away; if it does not go away, let him lie down.”2
Try recalling the last time you got angry. It might have started with a frown and your physical position would have triggered or aggravated it further, leading to unwanted reactions that cause discord with people around you. You might have hurt yourself or destroyed your possessions to ward your rage off. Therefore, always remember that your physical position matters!. When anger strikes, sit down if you were standing and lie down if you were already sitting.
#3 Give up quarrels
Anger can prevent us from looking at a situation from a normal, calm and mature manner. This hyperactive mode can overpower our thoughts and words. This results in endless and unwanted arguments.
The Prophet said, “I guarantee a house in Jannah for one who gives up arguing, even if he is in the right.” 3
SubhanAllah! It is not easy to give up fair squabbles. And that’s why Prophet has guaranteed a place in Jannah-a priceless reward. The more we struggle towards goodness, the better our rewards will be in jannah insha’Allah. So the next time you are tempted to indulge in tit for tat word wars; calm down and remind yourself about the promised house in jannah!
#4 Observe Silence
The Messenger of Allaah said: “If any of you becomes angry, let him keep silent.” 4
Zipping our mouths to seal our tongue is a very difficult self control method. However, it is all about reviving a sunnah and is therefore, worth it. After all, silence can be the best retaliation.
#5 Controlling anger can make you stronger!
We all know the famous hadeeth where our Prophet said, “The strong-man is not one who wrestles well but the strong man is one who controls himself when he is in a fit of rage.”5
The first impression this prophetic command give us is “If you can control anger, you are strong”. But subhanAllah, it has another facet filled with wisdom.
You might forget to control anger in the first attempt and even fail to control it in the second attempt. But never stop trying. Learn from your mistakes and rise up from pitfalls. Not all of us are born strong, but we are all born to be strong. In other words, it’s not an overnight process for anyone of us to become “strong”. This process demands time, self motivation, effort and positive energy. Keep yourself motivated!
Allah and his final messenger Muhammad have provided us with these codes of conduct to help us become better each day. Let’s insha’Allah revive the Deen and become practicing Muslims. What tips do you have to control anger? Share with us in the comments section below. 🙂

MashAllah this is an excellent article. All of the ideas are so powerful. It is very important to be aware of oneself the moment one’s mood starts to dip. Being able to catch yourself in the early stages before you snowball into anger can help one to avoid blow-ups.
Jazaak Allah Khairan for a beautiful article. It’s really informative and useful. Inshallah I will implement all this in my everyday life. May Allah SWT give you the rewards for this. Anger really is a feeling that has to be curbed, even if one is right it’s always wise to seal your lips than to give in and repent later. I have had bitter experiences in my life where the harmful words are blurted out in anger and then we realize that we overreacted and dint really mean it but it’s too late coz we would have hurt a soul really bad. The wisest thing is to follow the Hadith of our beloved prophet SWS.
Try and marry a wife from the EAST and not the WEST!
And try to marry a good husband in general regardless East or west.
Absolutely Abdullaah, my comment was tongue in cheek designed to make people smile.
Assalamu alaikom wa rahma’tullah wa barakatohu amma ba’d, ma’sha Allah, beautiful reminders, every one matters, but sometimes, perhaps due to where we are, it is not always possible to change position. There is also the hadith in which the Prophet[saw] advised us to make wudu as the coolness of water extinguishes the fire of anger. But, I have also found, sometimes, when you have an irritated feeling, it is not clear why? So I ask myself aloud – why do I feel like this? That helps to dispel the sensation as well, since we know that anger usually comes from shaytan, not from any real wrong.
Jazaa Kallah Khair This article is very good and useful in our daily lives, anger is one of the things that can easily turn someone into doing the unthinkable. one could also control anger by diverting his or her attention towards other things other than what is causing the anger especially pleasant things.
