How does belief in the name of Allah: as-Salaam, help us follow our deen in our daily life?
The effect of belief in this particular name, as-Salaam, for the believers should ensure them that they will not be denied the fruit of their sacrifices. Whatever sacrifices they have made, whatever efforts they have striven for, they will not be denied its fruits.
Prophet Muhammed (ﷺ) informed us that the believer has to live in a self imposed prison in this life, while the disbeliever is free to roam around and to do whatever he pleases. He said,
“This world is a prison for the believer and paradise for the disbeliever.” [1]
So it means that the believer has to make sacrifices. He imposes on himself this denial of certain things. The belief in the name as Salaam ensures him that his sacrifice will not be in vain. It is something that Allah has commanded. Allah, being free from defect, His promise will be fulfilled.
In reality, though people tend to look at Islam and look at those practicing Islam as a matter of ‘don’t do this’ and ‘don’t do that’, but in reality, this is not the case.
The truth is that we are permitted to do the majority of things. There is only a minority, a small amount of things that we cannot do. For example, the story of Adam in Paradise. The whole garden was his, except for one tree. The similar principle applies to life. The forbidden things are few.
Satan has beautified these forbidden things, and has made us feel that our lives are incomplete unless we do these particular haram acts. Otherwise, there is really not much that we need to sacrifice because there is so much we can do. However, due to the pressure of the society around us and our desires, this seems to be a huge struggle. We literally live it as a struggle.
You may be tempted to partake with the disbelievers and enjoy the ‘Paradise’ in this life, but what about the aakhirah- which will be our permanent abode? Our belief in as-Salaam, our belief that Allah is free from any defects and that what He promises us is true, that He is the truth, gives us the confidence to stick on the right path, to stay with the way of Islam and to give up those other things. It motivates us to not get involved in them, knowing that there is really no value in it.
The things that are forbidden are harmful and that is why Allah forbade them. It is not as what people think that it is only to make life difficult for us, but it is to protect us from harm; whether we are able to see the harm, as in the case of alcohol and gambling, or whether we cannot see the harm, as in the case of pork and other forbidden things.
