Is building a Muslim community supposed to be challenging?
It is a challenge for Muslims to establish a Muslim community. Where Satan is busy, where Satan is saying, “No, you don’t want the Muslims to get together”, “No, it will be too difficult for proper Muslims to move in one area of the country”, “We bought our home here and to sell it,”etc. We will find a thousand and one excuses for why you cannot do it.
However Allah states:
“Oh believers, truly among your wives and your children are some that are enemies to yourself, so beware of them”[1]
Ibn Abbas said that this verse is revealed regarding some Meccans who were prevented from migrating to Medina to join Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in the early stages. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) had given the command for Hijrah but a number of them were prevented by their wives and children from joining the Hijrah, migration to Medina. As a result when they later joined Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in Medina, they learned that all the early immigrants learnt so much about Islam. They were so upset that they wanted to punish their wives.
We are supposed to know that making Hijrah in this country is possible; something we need to do. We need to create a Muslim community, not based on nationalism, ethnicity like Somali, Bengali, Pakistani, Arab community. We need a Muslim town -a town where Muslims are behind you, with you, next to you, your neighbors. This is the way Muslims should live. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said in an authentic narration. “I am innocent of every Muslim who lives in the midst of disbelievers.” The companions asked “Ya Rasulullah, why?” He answered, “Their fires should not be visible to one another.” [2]
