Life is not always a bed of roses and we should not expect it to be. Life is meant as a test; of our patience, gratitude, mercy towards others, obedience… Sometimes we do things we like and enjoy, while sometimes we do things we dislike or even hate, because they have to be done. The question is, “How to go through this life with much joy and tranquility?” “How can we go through trials with our heads high even during tough times?”

Let me give you a very simple tip that is guaranteed to work, in perhaps most of the situations you might encounter on your way to Jannah, by the permission of our Lord.

Live your life truly and completely for Allah, Lord of the worlds.

Did you hear the story about The Seven Blind Mice? In short, it is a story about seven blind mice touching different parts of an elephant and arguing about what that “something” they are touching is. Well, our life experience can be exactly as this tale. But let me give you an example:

You have had a really long and tiring day. You feel annoyed, exhausted, your head, back and feet ache. You are just not in a good shape and need to relax badly. Finally, you have made it into your favorite and comfortable chair. All the heaviness just fell upon you and you feel you cannot move anymore. Unexpectedly your loved one asks you to do something.

A possible scenario is an ugly argument causing frustrated and bitter mood in the air spoiling the rest of the day and perhaps even days to come, or ill feelings towards your loved one as you feel that they are not able to understand and be compassionate to the very tired you.

How can this situation be solved with joy and tranquility? What does this have to do with a tale about blind mice?

We have here a moment where you might feel that you have no energy to carry on; you just want to give up, argue and leave. You might feel hurt, mistreated and want to shut the world. This is one way to go. But wait, there is another. You can just simply “see the different part of the elephant” meaning change your point of view; look at the situation from a different angle; very simple, yet very effective solution. The blind mice were touching that one and the same elephant, just a different part of it and “saw” that same elephant in a different light; a snake, a rope, a fan, a cliff, etc. And exactly in the same manner, you can do the same action, but choosing a different perspective will alternate your view and feelings.

So lets come back to our example and try to solve this situation with joy and tranquility; “touching the different part of an elephant.”

Even though you feel like you have heavy weights on your shoulders, and that you would not get up even for a hundred dollars, you will stand up and do that favour for your loved one, not because you are expected to do it or because you don’t want to have an argument, but because you are thinking about the love for your Creator; you will do it to earn His pleasure and reward.

Look at the situation from the perspective of love for Allah and you will find satisfaction in everything you do.

See, you were able to look at the same situation from a different angle. And this view is not just any view, it is the perspective of Allah SWT. It is only in this regard, we will be able to find joy and tranquility in everything we do, even in such things we normally would dislike or not enjoy. Doing things for people is not always gratifying, however doing the same thing for Allah SWT is. He, in His infinite mercy and love, will give you the extra energy to carry on and you will feel marvelous.

We hear often that we should do things for Allah’s sake only and sometimes we link this only to our religious obligations forgetting that a reward and pleasure of Allah can be earned even through those less pleasant things when done from the right perspective.

So, just try it. Next time someone asks you for something, and you don’t feel like it, even if it is a glass of water, do not do it because they ask you, do it, because you want to please your Lord! Live your life truly and completely for Allah, Lord of the worlds.

“Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (Al-‘An`ām, 6:162)
