Ramadan is a blessed time of the year when you feel the absence of the devils (literally!) and can focus on your spirituality better than at any other time. Ramadan IS special! But, how can you maintain a spiritual high even after Ramadan? This article will help you with just that. Read on!
It is easy to get caught up in the Ramadan hype as everyone around you is constantly talking about it: the roads are full of signboards offering exclusive Ramadan discount deals; everyone seems to have a copy of the Quran, and  hey…even the TV is showing iftaar-time ads.
It’s “Ramadan time” so even the most sinful amongst us get a faith-uplift!
But for how long? That is the big question and that is up to us to decide!
Many a times, we cannot keep the Ramadan spirit alive after Ramadan because we just don’t care enough. So folks, what are we going to do now that Ramadan is over? Get back to the old routine? The routine of music in bed, interest (riba) in dealings, gossip in gatherings, flirting in streets? The same old routine of neglecting salaah? Or have you decided to change, to really change, this time?
Apart from blaming it on Shaytan (“He is back from the jail, how can I keep that spirit alive?!”), here are some tips which may aid you in keeping that awesome feeling of being close to Allah, which you felt during the blessed month.
1. Continue Doing Good Deeds
A sign that our efforts have been accepted in Ramadan is that we continue to do good even after Ramadan. It does not mean that we fast every single day even after Ramadan. All of us know we can’t and won’t be able to go to the masjid for nawafil prayers outside of Ramadan as regularly as we would like to. Our recitation of the Quran would decrease as well. That’s the reality! However, there are (and should be) some steps that you took during Ramadan. Let’s say you have climbed 100 steps. After Ramadan, you might come 30 steps down. Yes, that happens! But the point is: don’t go crashing down. Don’t go back to zero.
Ramadan is the time when we change ourselves. We get freedom from the prisons of our own making: the prison of loss, of desires, of obsession, of blameworthy attachments, of addictions, of being a slave of our whims, etc. Don’t lose your freedom after Ramadan.Â
Continue doing some good deeds that you were doing during the blessed month, like praying tahajjud for example.
“From one prayer to the next, from one Ramadan to the next, from one Hajj to the next, this expiates for whatever (sins) were committed from one to the next, so long as you avoid major sins.” 1
2. Try Even if it’s Little!
You might be of those who don’t even try to repent or get closer to Allah because of various reasons. But trust me, whatever you do during Ramadan for His sake (even if it’s little) will be appreciated by Him. Allah is ready to accept you, even if your efforts were minimal. I mean, if He comes running to you when you go walking to Him, 2 why would you want to go back to the old routine? Why not pick up the pieces from here and work towards building a stronger faith?
YOU’VE ALREADY GOT A START, so don’t lose it all.
3. Don’t Go Back to Square One
What’s the point of doing all those amazing deeds during Ramadan only to abandon them later? What was the point of long taraweehs if you go back to neglecting your obligatory salah (prayers) five times a day? Would you want all your deeds and efforts to go in vain? Down the drain? How devastating is that!
Think about it!
“Whoever says Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, seeking the Countenance of Allah thereby, and that is the last of his deeds, will enter Paradise. Whoever gives charity and that is the last of his deeds will enter Paradise.” 3
LAST DEED OF OUR LIFE COUNTS, and to have a good end, we need to stick to doing good at all times.
4. You Can Do Better
Does the thought of reading the Quran, attending the congregational prayers and fasting an entire month not provide you with encouragement that you (yes, you!) can become a very good slave of Allah?
Almost every one changes in Ramadan, one way or another. You see people frequenting the masajid more, the Qur’an recitation increases and more people are willing to give charity than they would have ever done.
Now look at yourself: do you see some positive changes in you too? Hopefully, your answer is YES. This means that all of us are actually capable of doing good and being better Muslims. We are capable of leaving evil desires, of obeying Allah and of being better Muslims. So oh Muslims, know that you can become a better version of yourself. Don’t let anyone stop you.
YOU ARE CAPABLE of becoming the best version of yourself. Everyone strives to be pious during Ramadan. What really shows our resolve and sincerity is keeping up the momentum long after the month is over.
5. Be Consistent
This hadith should be a strong motivation for us: When the Prophet was asked about which deeds are most beloved to Allah, he said,
“Those which are continuous, even if they are little.” 4
Bottom Line
This Ramadan, go for something different. Being good during Ramadan and returning to the same old bad habits after Ramadan has been the norm for many of us. Let us change the formula and make it this instead:
Staying good (at least up to some level) even AFTER Ramadan!
How tragic is it when people acknowledge Allah ONLY during Ramadan…don’t be of those people. Change for the better!
Please let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. We would love to hear your suggestions on how we can keep the Ramadan hype alive in us even after the blessed month has ended. 🙂

S. A. I think after Ramadan everyone is left to Fend for himself /herself compared to Ramadan when we have groups friends relatives and congregation to keep us going, so jist of the matter is We must encourage each other in religious duty and Dhikr so as to sustain the get going feeling of togetherness, United we stand divided we fall is very true indeed, it does becomes difficult to go salah to masjid alone when we see our friends relatives etc not so eager n busy in their own schedule, infact it demotivates and sustainability of salah looks difficult, in summary we must help each other in Islam to follow compulsory commandments come what may
Assalamu Alaikum WRB.Wonderful article.Mindblowing,if we think seriously. There goes a saying,”old habits are hard to change.”Its our level of Eemaan which keeps us going consistently.Lets assees our activities during Ramadan and after Ramadan.Lets look at our innerself and think deeply of our activities. What are we going say in presence of Allaah SWT of our actions. May Allaah SWT reward you for sharing your views.Wassalam.
Assalamualekum Brother.
The hadidth number on reference number 4 (Al bukhari 1798) is wrong. I just checked the Hadidth # 1798 and it this one:
Bukhari Hadidth 1798:
“Narrated by Ibn `Abbas:
When the Prophet (ď·ş) arrived at Mecca, some boys of the tribe of Bani `Abdul Muttalib went to receive him, and the Prophet (ď·ş) made one of them ride in front of him and the other behind him.”
Can you plz give the correct reference for the hadidth mentioned in the article which says “Those which are continuous, even if they are little.” ?

To my own perspective we should be less dependent of seeing people around us before we can have the spirit of lifting up Salah. Good if we can build up ourselves to be self motivated, to help motivate the weak ones as well as being a good example for other to embrace Islam is best for us. Since we know every little deeds for the purpose of Allah counts- my advise is to stay closer to him and let not lazy feeling get us down from be righteous.
