The Qur’an is the word of Allah  . It’s an honor and blessing for every Muslim parent to witness their children love the Qur’an.

Loving the Qur’an is not only limited to memorizing specific aayaat (verses) when instructed to do so. When a child loves the Qur’an, he feels the urge to recite ayat throughout the day, understand what he’s reciting, and is interested in everything related to the Qur’an. Children are predominantly influenced by their surroundings and their primary caregivers. So, the role of parents is crucial in helping children develop a strong and loving bond with the Qur’an.

Here are eight tips to help you instill the love of Quran in your child’s heart:

  1. Make du’a (supplication).

Du’a is the strongest weapon of a believer, especially for a parent concerning his/her children. Nothing happens except by the permission of Allah, and Allah can make all things possible. To make du’a, you need to first purify your intentions and remember that everything good that you do or intend to do should always be for the sake of Allah. Remind yourself of the virtues of the Qur’an to remain motivated.

“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.” (Surah Al Baqarah 2:2)

Don’t forget that as a parent, it is your duty to look out for your children and make sure they do what’s pleasing to Allah.

“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones…” Surah At-Tahrim (66:6)

  1. Have your children listen to the Qur’an often.

Start even before your children are born; while you’re still pregnant  When taking care of the house, cooking, or simply relaxing, play the recitation of  the Qur’an as much as you can. Allow the Qur’an to soothe the babies when they feel anxious or cry. As your children grow up, continue to play the audio recitation of the Qur’an around them few minutes at a time. It is very important for children to be familiar with the Qur’an as this would eventually make it easy for them to read and even memorize in Shaa Allah. You don’t need to sit your children down for hours because they have a much shorter attention span. Don’t limit the recitations with only Juz’ Amma because the focus here is to familiarize them with the Qur’an, not memorize.

  1. Go over the meaning of the verses/chapters.

“[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.” (Surah Sad 38:29)

Besides listening to the Qur’an every day, try going over the meaning of the aayaat/surahs. Don’t overwhelm them with too much details. Just tell them enough to capture their attention and interest. Your style of delivering should be age appropriate to make it easy for your children to understand and follow along.

  1. Share beautiful stories of the Qur’an.

“We relate to you, [O Muhammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’an although you were, before it, among the unaware.” (Surah Yusuf 12:3)

Allah  tells us quite a few stories in the Qur’an, and each story comes with a lesson and/or an inspiration. You could share these stories with your children by reading children’s books or by watching Islamic cartoon videos related to the topic. Sharing stories from the Qur’an helps children visualize the Qur’an a bit more and increases their understanding.

  1. Take it easy and encourage them.

Take it easy on your children and don’t try to force them to do too much at once. Don’t make listening to the Qur’an a chore. Be consistent, but few minutes at a time is all you need to grab your kids’ attention. Eventually, they may even want to listen/recite for longer periods. Also, be loving and avoid punishments because punishments may make your children have some type of resentment towards the Qur’an or it may scare them enough to only listen to the Qur’an when you’re around or because you said so. Remember, the goal is for them to love the Qur’an, not just listen to it to please you. The more love they have for the Qur’an, the more they’ll remember Allah.

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:28

Verbally encourage your kids whenever they listen/recite the Qur’an. Smile, let them know how good you think they are doing, and how proud you are of them. Try not to get them used to tangible prizes. If you do get them prizes, make it rare and spontaneous. You wouldn’t want your children to make a connection between reading the Qur’an and instant and tangible rewards. Rather, make it a habit to explain to them the virtues of the Qur’an such as healing and good deeds.

“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers…” Surah Al Isra’ 17:82

  1. Do family activities and play games.

Do activities with the whole family and come up with appropriate games based on facts from the Qur’an. An example is doing quizzes and setting up different teams to play against each other in a competitive yet loving and joyful way. Another example is doing activities that require everyone to participate by making research and doing creative crafts.

  1. Encourage them to share what they’ve learned.

“Narrated by ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him.); the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” 1

As your children’s knowledge of the Qur’an increases, allow them to share it with you. Also, make them comfortable enough to correct you when you make mistakes in your recitation. You want them to be of the best by teaching what they have learned.

  1. Show by example.

Simply put, actions are louder than words. Kids learn better when they see by example, not when they are told to do. Listen and recite the Qur’an every day; even for few minutes at a time. Showing your children the importance of the Qur’an and how much you love the Qur’an will encourage them to follow your footsteps inShaa Allah.

“And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith – We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained.” Surah At-Tur 52:21

At the end of the day, all you can do is try your best and trust Allah. The outcome on everything is up to Allah alone. We all want to be reunited with our children in Jannah, so let’s strive to do good and help them do the same inShaa Allah.
